Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Liu Xiaoming At the Philharmonia Orchestra's Chinese New Year Concert
尊敬的伦敦爱乐管弦乐团执行总监大卫•威尔顿先生，
女士们，先生们：
Mr. David Whelton,
Ladies and Gentlemen:
我很高兴与大卫•威尔顿总监一起欢迎各位出席伦敦爱乐管弦乐团的中国春节音乐会。我还要特别对从中国远道而来的朋友们致以热烈的欢迎！
It gives me great pleasure to join Mr. David Whelton in welcoming all of you to this Chinese New Year Concert by the Philharmonia Orchestra. Our warmest welcome also goes to our friends who have travelled all the way from China to be with us this evening.
今晚的音乐会是我三周来在英国出席的第二十场中国春节庆祝活动。作为英国春节系列活动的重头戏，今晚的演出恰逢元宵之夜，它将把几周欢度新春的喜庆氛围推向高潮。今晚，来自中国的杰出音乐艺术家们将与世界知名的伦敦爱乐管弦乐团同台献艺，我相信，这场音乐会将是中英文化元素的完美结合。
This evening’s special performance is one of the highlights of a very wide range of Chinese New Year celebrations being held in the UK. In fact, tonight’s event is exactly the twentieth celebration for the Chinese New Year I have attended for the past three weeks. Today also marks the Chinese Lantern Festival. In Chinese culture the Lantern Festival is the climax of the many weeks of Chinese New Year Celebrations.
Tonight’s concert brings together the world renowned Philharmonia Orchestra with outstanding musical artists from China. This creates a perfect match of Chinese and British culture.
首先，今晚的演出是中英两国历史文化交相辉映的美妙乐章。我们所在的洛迦诺厅，坐落于英国外交和联邦事务部的大楼内。这座由乔治•吉尔伯特•斯科特于1858年设计建造的大厅，见证了英国外交史上许多重要时刻，包括2014年中国国务院总理李克强对英国的访问。今晚在这里，我们将见证又一重大盛事。今天的音乐会不仅是一场欢度中国春节的庆典，更将为深化中英两国文化交流添砖加瓦，为习近平主席对英国事访问开启的中英关系“黄金时代”增光添彩。
First of all, it is a perfect match of traditions and cultural heritages. The historic Locarno Suite here at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was designed by George Gilbert Scott in 1858 and has witnessed many important diplomatic events in British history. This includes the visit by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in 2014.
Here tonight, we are about to witness another important Sino-UK event that I hope may establish a tradition in the years to come. This concert creates a wonderful template with which to jointly celebrate the very rich musical cultural heritages of China and the UK.
In addition, this evening is a splendid contribution to the deepening cultural exchanges between China and the UK in the “Golden Era” launched by President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the UK.
第二，今晚的节目可以说是中西合璧的完美典范。本次音乐会将由中国著名指挥家余隆指挥，这是他首次与伦敦爱乐管弦乐团同台演出。此外还有几位来自中国的杰出音乐家共同助阵，包括年仅十三岁的钢琴奇才李仲欣，京剧歌唱家王怡和笛子演奏家徐艳等。
Secondly, tonight’s repertoire is a perfect musical match of the East and the West:
• The concert will be conducted by a distinguished Chinese conductor Maestro Yu Long, in his debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra.
• We will be privileged to hear Maestro Yu Long conduct some of China’s brilliant soloists.
• We will hear thirteen-year old piano prodigy Johnson Li Zhongxin.
• Also there will be a performance by Peking Opera singer Wang Yi.
• And Xu Yan will show us her extraordinary skills as a Bamboo Flutist.
第三，今晚的音乐会是中英伙伴关系的重要体现。正是由于中英两国伙伴单位的携手努力与共同付出，我们才能欣赏今晚这台精彩节目。我要感谢中国音乐家协会录音艺术与唱片学会对本次活动的大力赞助，感谢伦敦爱乐管弦乐团、拿督黄纪达基金会和五粮液集团对本次活动的鼎力支持。特别值得一提的是，去年五粮液集团在伦敦唐宁街10号首相府与伦敦爱乐管弦乐团签署了为期五年的伙伴关系协议，成为了乐团的首席国际合作伙伴。
Thirdly, the event tonight is a good example of perfect partnership between China and the UK. This evening has been made possible through a number of key partners. Most notably:
• There is the sponsorship from the China Recording Association.
• The support of the Philharmonia Orchestra.
• The generosity of the KT Wong Foundation.
• And, last but by no means least, the Wuliangye Group China which is the Principal International Partner of the Philharmonia Orchestra. Wuliangye Group and the Philharmonia Orchestra signed a historic five-year partnership at No. 10 Downing Street a year ago. Their generosity is much appreciated.

Finally, I am delighted to do some advertising here for another musical event next year. This will be a Chinese New Year Concert next year with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Maestro Yu Long at the Royal FestivaI Hall on 9 February 2017. A roster of top-flight musicians from East and West will join the Philharmonia Orchestra in a splendid Spring Festival celebration with music drawn from both Western and Chinese cultures. All of you will be welcome to this event.
